Plenty of positive marks at state for Glendale Community College track and field

Though the Glendale Community College women’s and men’s track and field teams didn’t reel in any state championships, they didn’t leave the state meet unnoticed.

The Vaqueros departed American River College in Sacramento on Saturday with four athletes receiving All-American honors. Two Glendale women posted runner-up finishes in their races.

Sophomore Giselle Masedo took second in the 1,500-meter race in a personal-best 4 minutes 39.62 seconds and finished sixth in the 5,000 in 18:29.58 to garner double All-American status. Freshman Angelica Salas was second in the 3,000 steeplechase, finishing in a personal-best 11:26.45. Teammate Leana Setian, a freshman, was fourth in the 1,500 in 4:47.58.

Shane Thompson received All-American honors for the men’s team with a fourth-place finish in the 5K in 15:20.22.

A top-six finish earned All-American accolades.

“I thought we definitely had a great day,” Glendale college coach Eddie Lopez said. “I’m pleased with just about everything we were able to do and our goal was to get some All-Americans and we were able to do that.”

Salas began things in the steeplechase, which she nearly won. She held the lead entering the final lap before Diani Ellis of College of the Canyons (11:15.61) passed Salas to capture the event.

“Angie stayed right in there and lost the lead with about 500 meters to go,” Lopez said. “It’s the first race of the day and it had to be around 100 degrees on the track. She’s still got a lot to be proud of.

“We got very good times from Giselle and Leanna in the 1,500. Giselle was able to break 4:40, which was a goal coming in. It’s a tough race to compete in and it’s about trying to hold everybody off to give yourself a chance.”

Alyssa Block of Sequoias took the 1,500 in 4:36.72.

Thompson, a sophomore and one of three Vaqueros to take part in the 5K, had a superb effort in the meet’s second-to-last race.

“Shane gave it everything he had,” Lopez said. “It’s another one of those real tough races. I think all three of our guys ran well.”

Sophomore Alejandro Ambrosio and freshman Raymond Lopez were eighth and 10th, respectively, in the 5K. Ambrosio finished in 15:27.23 and Lopez clocked 15:41.55. Hartnell’s Jorge Sanchez won in 15:14.77.

Setian took seventh in the 1,500 (18:38). Cuesta’s Miranda Daschian won the event in 17:33.18

Glendale’s Nona Boyajyan, a freshman, was seventh in 800 in 2:22.88. Savanna Park of San Bernardino captured the race in 2:12.15.
