Fabian helps Glendale softball cruise to victory against Schurr

GLENDALE — Sammy Fabian doesn’t have to analyze her role too much.

The standout center fielder for the Glendale High softball teams embraces her responsibilities, which include reaching base and gliding around them. It’s been customary for Fabian, a junior.

Fabian collected three hits to extend her hitting streak to 51 and drove in three runs Wednesday to power host Glendale to a 7-1 nonleague win against Schurr.

“I’m just up there to help get a rally started,” said Fabian, a reigning All-Area pick who has hit safely in every one of her high school games. “If I can get on, I have a lot of confidence that my teammates will get me in and keep it going. You just try to keep the streak going, but you have other things to do to help out the team.

“It’s a cool accomplishment. I don’t really try to think about it too much.”

Fabian also scored two runs for Glendale (5-2). The Nitros finished with 10 hits, including a bases-clearing double in the sixth by Claire Smith.

Glendale senior starting pitcher Jordan Lousararian went the distance, striking out five and limiting Schurr (5-3) to five hits. The right-hander saw her bid for a shutout fall by the wayside in the seventh.

“I like the way we’ve started the season off,” said Lousararian, a reigning All-Area honoree. “We’re hitting well and we are getting good all-around defense. You become more confident when you can do all of that.”

Fabian gave Glendale a 1-0 lead in the third with a lead-off inside-the-park home run to right-center field.

“You don’t expect to hit them often,” said Fabian, a reigning all-state selection. “If it happens, it happens.”

The Nitros scored three runs in the fourth to pad their advantage to 4-0. A run-scoring single by Aurora Funaro made it 2-0 before Fabian sliced a double down the left-field line to make it 4-0.

“It’s amazing when Sammy gets up. There’s an instant confidence she’ll do something big,” Lousararian said. “She always going to be a hard out. It’s great to see what’s she been able to do.”

Smith contributed a three-run triple to center to make it 7-0

Esme Piedra, Alex Howard, Jessica Thlick, Amanda Gonzalez and Grace Sinisterra each scored a run for Glendale. The Nitros received two hits from Funaro and one apiece from Piedra, Lousararian and Gonzalez

The Spartans avoided being blanked when Christa Martinez doubled in Jazmine Ayala. Karen Roman had two hits for Schurr.

“We’ve started off well and we’ve scheduled some real good [nonleague] opponents,” Nitros Coach Greg Martin said. “We’ve had some success and you know going in that every team is different.

“We have different ways to beat teams. We just try to go out there and take everything in stride.”
