Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club: Crescenta Valley football rolling right along

The Glendale YMCA Quarterback Club, in its 75th year, meets Tuesdays at the Elk’s Lodge. The following are odds and ends from the latest meeting.

DETERMINED FALCONS STAY ON ROLL

It’s been an impressive start to the season for Crescenta Valley.

The Falcons are 5-0, 2-0 in the Pacific League and ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division VI behind Bishop Diego.

“We want to keep things going and that’s what we talk about,” said Crescenta Valley coach Paul Schilling, whose team posted a 38-8 league win against rival Muir on Friday. “Against Muir, I felt like we were the better team going in.

“We didn’t expect things to go as they did against Muir and I thought we played our best on offense in the first half. Then things snowballed out of control in our favor.”

Crescenta Valley, which won the league title last season, will be at Pasadena at 7 p.m. Friday.

TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS FOR TORNADOES

It took longer than expected for Hoover to arrive at its Pacific League home game against Burbank on Thursday. The Tornadoes make the short commute cross town to Glendale High’s Moyse Field for their home contests.

Things went awry for Hoover (1-4, 0-2 in league) a couple of hours before the start of the game, which saw Hoover lose 47-14.

“Our bus was supposed to be [at Hoover] at 5 p.m. and we didn’t get picked up until about 6,” Hoover coach Terrance Jones said. “When we got there, we asked Burbank for a few extra minutes to warm up. I don’t think we were prepared mentally.

“We’re young and we’re adjusting. We’re trying to figure things out.”

Hoover will look to end its three-game losing streak against visiting Muir at 7 p.m. Friday.

LONG JOURNEY LEADS TO VICTORY

St. Francis coach Jim Bonds expected a lengthy commute to Buena Park for a nonleague game Friday. Turned out Bonds was correct.

St. Francis (5-0) cruised to a 39-14 win and is ranked fifth in CIF Southern Section Division III with Angelus League action on deck.

“You know it’s going to be a long drive when you head that way,” Bonds said. “It took two hours and 20 minutes to get there.

“We were a little sluggish in the first quarter and then we did a good job the rest of the way. We were excited to go down there and get a win.”

St. Francis won without starting quarterback Darius Perrantes, who suffered a back injury the week earlier. Bonds said it wasn’t clear when Perrantes would return and Greg Dulcich will continue handling the signal-calling responsibilities.
