Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College baseball relinquishes conference title

COLLEGE BASEBALL

College of the Canyons 10, Glendale Community College 8: The visiting Vaqueros saw their bid for a Western State Conference East Division championship foiled by Canyons in Thursday’s contest.

Canyons (27-11, 16-2 inthe division) wrapped up the division title after beating Glendale (31-7-1, 15-2-1) for the second time in three days. The Cougars got a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday.

Glendale received three hits and five runs batted in from Cristian Montes, including a two-run double in the sixth and a run-scoring single in the eighth to tie it at 8.

GCC had won the last two conference titles.

MEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College at Ojai Valley Tournament: The Vaqueros competed Thursday at the event, which serves as the state tournament.

In singles, Glendale got victories following first-round byes from Christian Hess (6-2, 6-4 over Maab Al-Jamaili of Grossmont) and Chris Pope (6-1, 6-2 over James Garcia of Reedley). Arin Meserkhani posted a 6-1, 6-1 win against Gabriel Tovar of Reedley before suffering a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Peter Trhoc of Palomar.

Glendale’s John Robertson lost, 6-2, 6-1, to Riku Goto of Saddleback in the first round and Kevin Orellana fell, 6-2, 6-2, to Eric De Romas of American River after a first-round bye.

In doubles, Pope and Hess had a first-round bye before posting a 6-2, 6-1 win against San Diego City’s Jacques Desmet and Daniel Villa Rosas. Mererkhani and Orellana defeated Krystov Fout and Djaulres Vince Cruz of Solano, 6-2, 2-6, 10-7 after a first-round bye. Robertson and Steven Sandoval suffered a 5-7, 6-1, 16-14 opening-round defeat to Josh Grawal and Theo Martinez of Mission.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College at Ojai Valley Tournament: Six Vaqueros entered Thursday’s first day of action and five earned advancement to Friday.

Freshman Hailey McNall will be extra busy Friday as she advanced in singles play to the Rround of 32 after following up a bye with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Imperial Valley’s Graciela Favela.

McNall will face Riverside’s Hana Papaco to open Friday.

McNall also advanced in doubles with partner Kanako Kihara. The duo received a bye and then topped College of the Sequoias’ Angelika Loewen and Maddy McDonald, 6-3, 6-1. The pair will face Canada’s Diana Barcelata and Jessica Berg.

Like McNall, Glendale’s Tsukimi Ono also earned double advancement.

Ono received a bye in the first round singles bracket and then topped Fresno’s Erica Hendrick, 6-1, 6-0. Ono will next face De Anza’s Miriam Lopez.

In doubles play, Ono joined with Veronika Galstyan to beat Cabrillo’s Caitlin and Laura Black, 6-0, 6-0, after receiving a first-round bye. The Glendale pair will next take on Modesto’s Sarah Kellogg and Monica Poole.

Glendale’s other advancing pair was Alexa Mendez and Melody Emmanouilidi, who took advantage of a bye by next beating Foothill’s Jessica Kim and Yajaira Torres, 3-6, 6-4, 10-3. The duo is set to face Saddleback’s Kristina Parks and Dominique Willette.

Kihara fell in singles play to Willette, 6-0, 5-7, 6-1.

BOYS’ GOLF

Flintridge Prep in Prep League individual finals: Flintridge Prep couldn’t advance any of its four players Thursday at Brookside Golf Course No. 2 in Pasadena.

Ben Sacks carded a seven-over-par 79 to finish fifth at 158. Sacks missed advancing to the CIF playoffs by one stroke, as the top four players advanced.

The Rebels also got a 96 from Brendan Barton for 186, followed by Matthew Choi (90 for 188) and Cameron Wu (102 for 191).

St. Francis 199, Glendora 210: The Golden Knights (9-5) received an even-par 36 from Stian Lintvedt on Thursday to post a nonleague win at Glendora Country Club. Aidan Tracey and Henry Fitzhugh had 39s for St. Francis.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Arcadia 16, Crescenta Valley 2: Crescenta Valley finished in second place in the Pacific League following Thursday’s league home defeat. The Falcons are 11-6, 6-2 in league, losing both league contests to Arcadia.

Glendale 9, Hoover 9 (Glendale wins on games, 82-73): Host Glendale topped cross-town rival Hoover in Thursday’s Pacific League match to take fourth in league. The Nitros are 5-9, 5-7 in league.

SOFTBALL

Glendale 10, Muir 0 (five innings): Glendale cruised to a Pacific League home victory Thursday. The Nitros (12-7, 6-4 in league) received three hits, two runs and two runs batted in from Sammy Fabian, two hits, two runs and three RBI from Mona Delarea and two hits and two RBI from Amanda Gonzalez.

Arcadia 15, Hoover 0 (five innings): Hoover dropped a Pacific League road contest Thursday. The Tornadoes are 3-10, 1-8 in league.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Glendale 14, Long Beach Wilson 4: Glendale (9-6) picked up a nonleague road win Thursday, getting three goals each from Kevin Perez and Albert Ruballos.
