Sports Roundup: Crescenta Valley volleyball takes third at host tourney

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Crescenta Valley at Crescenta Valley Tournament: The Falcons turned in a strong effort by finishing 5-1 and taking third place in the Gold Division on Saturday afternoon and libero Jordan Nelson was named to the all-tournament team.

Crescenta Valley (22-5-2) began Saturday’s action with a 25-10, 25-14 victory over Anaheim Canyon to advance to the tournament semifinals.

The Falcons’ run to a title was derailed, though, as they lost to Eagle Rock, 25-19, 23-25, 15-13.

Crescenta Valley recovered to top Thousand Oaks, 25-19, 25-21, for tournament bronze.

Crescenta Valley opened tournament action with a 3-0 run through pool play action on Friday.

The Falcons won pool A by defeating Righetti (25-16, 25-15), Salesian (25-10, 25-9) and Paraclete (25-20, 25-14).

Flintridge Prep in Crescenta Valley Tournament: The Rebels posted a 4-2 record through the two-day tournament and finished sixth in the Gold Division.

Flintridge Prep (20-6) dropped its first bracket contest, 25-20, 25-16 to Eagle Rock on Saturday morning. The Rebels recovered to defeat Anaheim Canyon, 25-17, 17-25, 15-12, to advance to the fifth-place match where Flintridge Prep lost to Taft, 25-23, 25-23.

Flintridge Prep started off strong Friday by going 3-0 and winning pool D.

The Rebels topped Taft (19-25, 25-20, 15-9), Burbank (23-25, 25-20, 15-9) and Palmdale Aero (26-24, 25-19) to earn the top spot.

BOYS’ TENNIS

St. Francis at Ojai Valley Tournament: The Golden Knights’ John and Ian Free turned in a stellar showing at the prestigous Ojai Valley CIF Doubles Tournament, concluding their run Saturday with a semifinal defeat against top-seeded Connor Lee and Bryce Pereira of San Marino, 6-2, 7-6(2).

Lee and Pereira went on to win the championship.

In Thursday’s opener, the Freers beat Nordhoff High’s Mikel Elizalde and Dakota Martin, 6-1, 6-3, before returning that day for a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Glendora’s Tommy Folsom and Justin Lay.

On Friday, the Golden Knights swept Hans Hwang and Soomin Lee of University, 6-4, 6-4, and then returned for a quarterfinal win against La Costa Canyon’s Mitchell Davis and Ryan Dehmoubed, 7-6(2), 6-1.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Ojai Valley Junior Tournament: Elena Goodman of Glendale advanced to the Ojai Junior Girls’ 14 Singles Tournament quarterfinals on Friday afternoon where she was defeated by No. 4 seed Kenadee Semenik, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Goodman opened play Thursday with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Newbury Park’s Essence Yag. She had another 6-0, 6-0 victory against Tiffany Reese later on Thursday.

On Friday, Goodman bested Madelyn Ferreros, 6-4, 6-1.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Glendale 9, St. Francis 8: The local schools concluded the regular season with a thriller won by the Nitros at home on Saturday night.

Glendale’s record improved to 9-6, while St. Francis fell to 6-13.

SOFTBALL

Eagle Rock 11, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 1: The Tologs lost Saturday afternoon in nonleague play.

FSHA fell to 11-6.
