Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College women’s cross-country back to winning

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at Mark Covert Classic: The Vaqueros picked up their first victory of the season on Saturday morning at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea.

Glendale took eighth in a race that included NCAA Division I schools, but was first among community colleges with 227 points as the Vaqueros edged Mt. San Antonio College (228).

Sophomore Angie Salas led the way for Glendale by taking 10th in a time of 18 minutes, 52 seconds. Jennifer Cazarez (38th, 19:54.3), Fiona Faulkner (63rd, 20:50.7), Nona Boyajyan (80th, 21:21.9) and Genesis Alvarez (95th, 21:57.7) rounded out the scoring for Glendale.

Former GCC standout Giselle Masedo of Loyola Marymount finished 27th in the race in 19:38.3.

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at Mark Covert Classic: The Vaqueros turned in a strong effort Saturday morning at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea.

Glendale finished fifth overall in the race that included NCAA Division I schools with 139 points and finished second among community colleges behind powerhouse Mt. San Antonio College (97).

Sophomore Raymond Lopez showed off his skills in a loaded field by finishing second in 25 minutes, 22.7 seconds. Lopez was his team’s lone top-20 finisher.

Paulo Vazquez followed by taking 21st (26:18.1), while Antonio Arroyo (47th, 26:57.5), Carlos Rivera (49th, 26:59.6) and Philip Thomas (54th, 27:05.6) rounded out the scoring.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

St. Francis at Fastback Shootout: The Golden Knights turned in their fair share of respectable efforts at the 2-mile event on Saturday at Arcadia County Park.

St. Francis’ top runner, Stuart Serventi, finished seventh in 10 minutes, 38.5 seconds in the sophomore race as the Golden Knights finished 15th with 323 points.

Ryan Baba led his team in the senior race by placing 64th (12:02.9), while Mark Polenzani earned 26th in 12:03 as St. Francis took eighth with 262 points. St. Francis also earned 17th with 446 points in the junior race as Nico Ciranna led the way in 50th (11:30.8).

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Pasadena Poly 14, St. Francis 7: The Golden Knights dropped below .500 after suffering a nonleague loss Saturday morning in Pasadena.

With the defeat, St. Francis is 1-2. The Golden Knights are back in action on Thursday at Hoover High.
