Glendale Community College 55, Chaffey College 51: Terrific first and third quarters buoyed Glendale and built a big enough lead to sustain a Chaffey fourth-quarter rally as the Vaqueros won the L.A. Southwest Tournament on Sunday.

GCC, which went 3-0 in the tournament to improve to 5-3, jumped out to a 16-6 lead after the first stanza and pulled ahead, 43-25, after outscoring the Panthers, 24-10, in the third. Chaffey won the final quarter, 26-12, and closed to 51-44 with 43 seconds left, but four free throws from Glendale High product Sylvia Vartazarian down the stretch provided the game-winning cushion.

Glendale, which avenged a season-opening loss at Chaffey, was led by the trio of Vartazarian, Paula Galicia and Cheyenne Jankulovski. Galicia had game-highs of 18 points and eight rebounds to go along with two steals. Vartazarian was a perfect seven for seven from the free throw line, scored 16 points, brought down seven rebounds and added two blocks, two steals and two assists. Jankulovski tallied 14 points on an excellent seven-for-nine shooting to go with eight rebounds and five assists en route to being named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Glendale emerged Saturday with a 71-44 win over Southwest and on Friday defeated Barstow, 58-49.

Against Southwest, 10 Vaqueros scored with seven scoring six or more points. Galicia had 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals and Vartazarian had eight points and six boards. Melissa Garcia and Fabi Jimenez added 10 points apiece.

In the win over Barstow, Angel Castro had 12 points and four assists, Jankulovski had 10 points and five steals and Galicia added nine points.
