Sports Roundup: Athj, Daniels lead Glendale college into tourney final

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 91, Barstow College 86: The Vaqueros (4-4) picked up a semifinal victory in the Don Johnson Tournament on Friday.

Glendale received 26 points apiece from Chris Daniels and Serigne Athj and 10 from Steven Hubbell. Athj added 14 rebounds and four assists.

Glendale opened the tournament Thursday with a 63-53 victory against Irvine Valley. Daniels finished with 20 points.

Glendale will compete in the tournament’s title contest Saturday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Crescenta Valley 64, St. Genevieve 51: The Falcons (2-1) received 32 points from Arman Pezeshkian and 13 from Christopher Arzoumanian on Friday to record a win in the Warrior Classic at Alemany High.

Palos Verdes 80, Hoover 47: The Tornadoes (2-5) fell Thursday in a consolation game of the Artesia Tournament.

Blair 55, Flintridge Prep 43 (overtime): AJ Nicassio had 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Rebels’ nonleague loss Thursday. Jonathan Le added nine points.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Crescenta Valley 75, St. Joseph’s 51: Crescenta Valley (5-2) picked up a win Friday in a Burroughs Tournament contest at Glendale Community College.

Providence 49, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 40: The Tologs (1-7) lost in Pasadena Poly Tournament play on Friday. Kysa Hayashi had 18 points for Flintridge Sacred Heart.

On Thursday, the Tologs lost to San Marino, 61-48.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Glendale 1, Arcadia 1: The Nitros began Pacific League play Friday with a tie on the road.

Birmingham 3, St. Francis 2 (Birmingham wins on penalty kicks, 4-2): The Golden Knights (3-1-1) fell Friday at home in a quarterfinal match of the Ralph Brandt Tournament. St. Francis got second-half goals from Ian Osdermatt and Scott Cross-Hernandez.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Arcadia 3, Glendale 2: Glendale played well in a Pacific League opener Friday. The Nitros (2-1) got a goal from Rita Grigorian.

Flintridge Prep 2, Woodrow Wilson 0: The Rebels (2-2) got one goal apiece from Julia Gonzalez and Mona Cesario on Thursday in an Aliso Cup match.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Flintridge Prep, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy at Los Altos Holiday Classic: It was a rough first day on Friday afternoon at the fifth annual event.

The Tologs (0-4) first lost to Birmingham, 11-4, at Sunny Hills High. Flintridge Sacred Heart followed up that defeat with a 16-6 loss to Sunny Hills.

The Rebels also went 0-2 with both contests at Los Altos.

Flintridge Prep (1-6) was first defeated by Montebello, 16-2, and then fell to Mark Keppel, 11-1.
