Sports Roundup: Crescenta Valley girls’ soccer wins nonleague thriller over Saugus

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Crescenta Valley 3, Saugus 2: On the strength of a game-winning goal from Mara Nysiet with 15 minutes remaining and a stellar game from Brianna McReynolds, the Falcons won a nonleague thriller on the road Saturday afternoon.

McReynolds continued her torrid season with two goals and the game-winning assist.

Trailing, 1-0, in the first half, Crescenta Valley evened the match when McReynolds scored off a Natalie Misetich assist. Saugus countered for a 2-1 halftime lead, but McReynolds evened it up again with a score off a Nicole Yim assist in the 63rd minute.

Crescenta Valley improved to 9-2 with its fifth straight win and its first over Saugus since 2009, as the Falcons had lost six straight to the Centurions.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 5, Marlborough 3: The Tologs opened up Mission League play Friday at Occidental College with a victory.

It was the fourth straight victory for FSHA (5-1-1, 1-0 in league).

Glendale 17, Muir 0: The Nitros poured it on Friday afternoon in a Pacific League match at home.

Glendale improved to 4-4, 2-2 in league. It was the most lopsided loss of the season by five goals for a struggling Muir program which had been outscored, 46-0, in its first four matches.

WRESTLING

Hoover at Arroyo Tournament: Tornadoes 160-pounder Allen Melikyan won his weight class while heavyweight Azad Markosian finished third at Saturday’s tournament in El Monte.

On Thursday, Hoover turned in a historic win with a 45-27 victory over San Marino in Glendale in the teams’ Rio Hondo League opener.

The victory was the first-ever for Hoover versus four-time defending league champion San Marino.

Andrew West (195), Orlando Rosa (152) and Tigran Aleksanyan (145) had pins for Hoover.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Flintridge Sacred Heart in Savanna Tournament: It was a solid run for the Tologs in the two-day event in Anaheim.

Flintridge Sacred Heart went 3-2, capping its run with a 5-3 loss to Los Alamitos in Saturday afternoon’s fifth-place match.

The Tologs opened with a 6-2 win on Friday over El Rancho before rallying from a five-goal, fourth-quarter deficit to force overtime and defeat host Savanna, 9-8, later in the evening.

Flintridge Sacred Heart opened championship semifinal play with a 10-2 loss to Laguna Hills, 10-2, before rebounding for a 9-2 win versus West Torrance.

Junior Zoe Drobenko led the Tologs with 15 goals through the first four matches.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

St Francis 66, Canyon Country Canyon 58: The Golden Knights upped their record to 10-5 with Saturday evening’s nonleague win at Alemany High.

Wildwood 55, St. Monica Academy 52: The Crusaders lost in nonleague action on the road Thursday to drop to 3-7.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College at Chaffey Tournament: The Vaqueros split a pair of games on Friday and Saturday in the Chaffey Challenge Tournament.

GCC (9-7) opened with a win on Friday against Desert, 85-67, before losing to Chaffey, 72-60.

In the loss Saturday to Chaffey, Serigne Athj had 18 points and seven rebounds and Freddy Kuo turned in a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Dom Gully added 12 points and five assists, while Jordan Matthews pulled down 10 rebounds.

In the win against Desert on Friday, Gully had 16 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Four other Vaqueros scored in double-digits: Athj (15 points, six rebounds), Frank Irowa (14 points, five rebounds), Matthews (13 points, nine rebounds and five assists) and Jack Karapetyan (12 points, 10 rebounds and three assists).
