Sports Roundup: FitzGerald-led Crescenta Valley boys’ cross-country advances to finals

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Crescenta Valley at CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries: The Falcons are on their way to the finals after qualifying out of Friday morning’s prelims at Riverside City Cross-Country Course.

Ninth-ranked Crescenta Valley finished third in the final heat of the division with 125 points and punched its ticket to the Division I finals back at Riverside on Nov. 19.

Pacific League champion Colin FitzGerald paced the Falcons by finishing fourth in a mark of 15:12.

Junior Zach Johnson (16th, 15:32.3) was one of three additional Falcons to finish in the top 50, which also included sophomore Manan Vats (20th, 15:34.7) and junior Artin Allahverdian (35th, 15:56.3).

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Crescenta Valley at CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries: Hoping to advance to the Division I finals, the Falcons came up short at Friday morning’s prelims at Riverside City Cross-Country Course.

Crescenta Valley needed to place in the top eight, but finished 13th in the second Division I heat with 343 points.

Junior Naila Ortiz was the Falcons’ top finisher, taking 55th in 19:54.4.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Moorpark College 70, Glendale Community College 67: The host Vaqueros (1-2) fell Thursday in a nonconference contest.

The Vaqueros received 16 points each from Freddy Kuo and Jordan Matthews and 13 from Dom Gully. Matthews had six rebounds and Arin Ovanessian contributed five assists. Kuo had five rebounds and three blocks.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Victor Valley College 3, Glendale Community College 0: On Wednesday, the Vaqueros lost for the 12th straight match, falling at home in Western State Conference South Division play, 25-14, 25-20, 25-15.

GCC is 3-21, 0-7.
