Sports Roundup: Flintridge Prep volleyball opens league with sweep

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Prep 3, Chadwick 0: The Rebels began Prep League action Thursday with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-11 home win. Flintridge Prep (9-2) received nine kills and two aces apiece from AJ Nicassio and Jonny Samuels and seven kills and two blocks from Majeed Ismail.

SOFTBALL

Glendale 11, Bell Gardens 1 (six innings): Aurora Funaro allowed one hit and struck out eight on Wednesday to help host Glendale (6-3) pick up a nonleague victory in a game called because of the 10-run rule.

The Nitros received two hits, three runs and three runs batted in from Mona Delarea and two hits and two runs from Tiffany Bartamian.

BASEBALL

Crescenta Valley 10, 13, Marina 8, 8: The Falcons swept their nonleague doubleheader on Wednesday at Stengel Field to improve to 6-1.

In the first game, Scott Vinceri had two hits and three runs batted in.

In the night cap, Vinceri had three hits and two RBI, Anthony Russo had two hits, Will Rees had two RBI, a hit and a walk and Nico Arredondo drove in a pair of runs. Will Smiley threw four innings with six strikeouts, no walks and two runs allowed and, at the plate, had a hit and two walks.

Pasadena Poly 12, Flintridge Prep 5: The Rebels dropped their Prep League opener on Thursday at the Glendale Sports Complex and had their 16-game league winning streak snapped in the process.

Prep fell behind, 9-0, after three innings. Max Rosenfeld had two hits, a run and a run batted in for the Rebels (6-3) and Danny Chiarodit had two walks, a hit and a run scored.

Glenn 6, Glendale 0: The Nitros (0-5) dropped a home game Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

Chadwick 6, Flintridge Prep 2: Flintridge Prep dropped a Prep League home contest Thursday. Olivia Stevens had a triple and a run batted in and Taylor Yoshida had a double and an RBI for the Rebels (3-2, 1-1 in league) against the reigning league champs.

Crescenta Valley 21, Van Nuys 0 (five innings): The Falcons rolled to an easy win on Wednesday to improve to 4-2.

BOYS’ GOLF

Flintridge Prep 194, Milken Community 230: The Rebels (5-5) registered a nonleague win Thursday at Woodley Lakes Golf Course. Flintridge Prep received an even-par 36 from Ben Sacks and 38s from Matthew Choi and Brendan Barton.

On Wednesday, Temple City topped Flintridge Prep, 213-224, in a nonleague match at Eaton Canyon Golf Course. Preston Ho carded a four-over-par 39 for the Rebels, who got a 40 from Sacks.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Harvard-Westlake 130, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 50: The Tologs fell in a Mission League road meet Thursday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

La Cañada 12, Flintridge Prep 6: Visiting Flintridge Prep (2-3) dropped a nonleague match Wednesday.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Redondo Union 16, Glendale 6: Glendale (7-4) lost a nonleague home match Wednesday. Erika Lopez had three goals for the Nitros, who got two from Rachel Fong.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 6, Antelope Valley 0: Host Glendale cruised to a Western State Conference win Thursday. Glendale (12-2, 8-1 in conference) got wins in singles from Tsukimi Ono (6-0, 6-0), Kanako Kihara (6-0, 6-0), Melody Emmanouilidi (6-0, 6-0) and Gabrielle Bautista (6-0, 6-0).

Kihara and Emmanouilidi (8-2) and Alexa Mendez and Bautista (8-0) registered wins in doubles for the Vaqueros.

On Wednesday, Glendale picked up a 4-2 nonconference home win against New Mexico Military Institute.

Glendale got singles wins from Ono (6-0, 6-1), Hailey McNall (6-1, 6-4), Veronika Galstyan (6-1, 6-2) and Kihara (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles, the Vaqueros received victories from Ono and Galstyan (8-6) and McNall and Kihara (8-1).

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 8, Antelope Valley College 3: Glendale got two hits each from Thad Wilson, Mondo Rodriguez, Cristian Montes and Grant Mona on Thursday to record a Western State Conference East Division home win at Stengel Field.

Glendale (17-5, 2-1 in the division) got two runs batted in from Bruno Teramoto.
