Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College baseball clinches share of conference title

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Glendale Community College 15, West Los Angeles 7: Scoring eight runs over the final two innings, the Vaqueros pulled away for a Western State Conference South Division road victory Thursday afternoon, clinching a share of their second consecutive division title and their fifth in six seasons.

Left fielder Jared Akins homered and finished three for five with three runs batted in and two runs for the Vaqueros, who clinched a share of the conference title.

Glendale third baseman Frankie Garriola also homered and had three runs and two RBI, while Mondo Rodriguez tripled and drove in two runs. Chris Colarossi, Liam Shibata and Zach Mausser all scored two runs for Glendale.

Ryan Losman improved to 7-1 with the win, while allowing three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts in six innings of work.

Glendale can claim the conference crown outright with in the regular season finale on Friday. GCC enters the contest a game ahead of Bakersfield.

SOFTBALL

Glendale 14, Muir 1 (five innings): Alex Howard had four hits and three runs batted in as the Nitros won their eighth straight with Thursday’s Pacific League win at Muir.

Sammy Fabian had a pair of doubles and four RBI, pushing her hitting streak to a whopping 60 games.

Glendale is now 14-4, 8-2 in league for a second-place tie with Crescenta Valley.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Crescenta Valley 3, Arcadia 0: The Falcons continued their postseason push with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-17 Pacific League home victory Thursday afternoon.

With the win, Crescenta Valley improved to 14-11 and 8-3 in league with one league match remaining.

The Falcons are tied for second in league and can take the spot with a win versus league champion Burroughs (11-0) on Tuesday and a loss by Burbank (8-3) at Arcadia on the same day.

Any other combination will result in Crescenta Valley taking third.

Alemany 3, St. Francis 1: With an opportunity to take control of the Mission League’s final automatic playoff spot, the Golden Knights fell in a Mission League road match, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, on Thursday afternoon.

The defeat dropped St. Francis’ record to 9-9 and 4-6 in league, which ties them with Crespi for fourth place with two matches remaining. St. Francis will close the season hosting Crespi on Tuesday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Glendale 11, Hoover 7: The Nitros prevailed at Hoover High on Thursday to wrap up Pacific League dual meet play.

Glendale took six doubles sets and five in singles.

For the Tornadoes, the No. 1 doubles team of Mark and Anton Belosludtsev swept, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0. Singles players Paul Kim and Nathan Huynh each won two sets.

Arcadia 16, Crescenta Valley 2: The Falcons lost their Pacific League finale Thursday afternoon on the road.

With the win, Arcadia wrapped up the outright league title, while the Falcons (11-5, 10-2 in league) finished second.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Oak Park 15, Glendale 4: The Nitros lost to one of the top teams in Southern California on Thursday at home.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

West Ranch 8, St. Francis 4: The Golden Knights dropped a Mission League road match on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Knights are now 8-8 and 4-6 in league.

St. Francis finishes the regular season on Friday at Valencia.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Loyola 104, St. Francis 23: The Golden Knights dropped their Mission League finale on Thursday afternoon.

St. Francis’ lone victory came from freshman Matthew Molina, who won the boys’ high jump in a mark of 5 feet, 10 inches.

The Golden Knights finished the regular reason with a 2-4 mark.
