Sports Roundup: Glendale Community College cross-country sweeps Golden West Central Park Classic

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at Golden West Central Park Classic: Glendale was dominant, defeating Orange Coast College, 32-93, at Friday morning’s Golden West Central Park Classic on the four-mile Central Park course in Huntington Beach.

Sophomore Shane Thompson doubled his pleasure by not only leading his team to victory, but also by picking up the individual triumph in 21 minutes 9.7 seconds.

Luis Celaya followed right behind for the Vaqueros and took third (21:19.5), while Alejandro Ambrossio (seventh, 21:37.2), Raymond Lopez (eighth, 21:38.5) and Edwin Morales (13th, 21:48.7) finished off the scoring for Glendale.

The win was the first for the Vaqueros since a season-opening triumph at the Oxnard Invitational on Aug. 26.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Glendale Community College at Golden West Central Park Classic: There’s been no stopping the Glendale Community College women’s cross-country team this season.

Once again, the Vaqueros steamrolled the competition, defeating Southern California rival Mt. San Antonio College, 22-28, at Friday morning’s Golden West Central Park Classic on the 5-kilometer Central Park course in Huntington Beach.

Not only did the Vaqueros take the top spot in the team standings, but Vaqueros sophomore Giselle Masedo won for the second time in as many weeks in a mark of 19 minutes, 10.8 seconds.

Glendale sophomore Leana Setian finished runner-up in 19:19.6, while teammates Fiona Faulkner (fifth, 19:35.6), Fabiola Naranjo (sixth, 19:45.7) and Angelica Salas (eighth, 19:51.8) scored within the top 10.

The victory was the fourth in five races for the Vaqueros this season.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Flintridge Prep 20, Pasadena Poly 7: Through two Prep League contests, the Rebels have looked unstoppable.

After defeating the archrival Panthers at home on Friday afternoon, Flintridge Prep improved to 5-2 and 2-0 in league. The Rebels have outscored Poly and Milken Community by a combined tally of 36-8.
