Sports Roundup: St. Francis baseball ends drought

BASEBALL

St. Francis 12, Crespi 1: It figured that on a rainy day, the Golden Knights would break a couple of droughts.

St. Francis picked up its first victory this season on Tuesday afternoon, broke an overall 14-game skid and snapped a Mission League seven-game losing streak with a road victory in a league opener.

The Golden Knights (1-7) connected on 11 hits, with two hits a piece from Brandon Lewis, Christian Muro, Doyle Kane and Niko Khoury. Senior pitchers Evan Tontini and Nolan Shwery combined for a three-hitter, while allowing four walks and one earned run.

Crescenta Valley 2, Redlands 0: Will Smiley pitched five innings, striking out three, walking two and allowing three hits in a victory Monday evening at the Babe Herman Tournament.

Scott Vinceri pitched two innings of relief for the save with two strikeouts, three walks and no runs or hits. Vinceri also finished two for three with a double with a run batted in. The Falcons improved to 8-1.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Loyola 3, St. Francis 0: The Golden Knights fell in a Mission League home match, 25-16, 25-20, 25-22, on Tuesday afternoon.

With the loss, St. Francis is 3-7, 0-4 in league.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Harvard-Westlake 11, St. Francis 6: The Golden Knights dropped their fourth straight match with Tuesday’s Mission League defeat. With the defeat, St. Francis is now 3-5, 0-3 in league.

MEN’S TENNIS

Glendale Community College 9, Victor Valley College 0: The visiting Vaqueros picked up a Western State Conference win Tuesday.

Glendale (11-4, 6-2 in conference) got victories in singles from Christian Hess (6-0, 6-1), Chris Pope (6-1, 6-1), Kevin Orellana (6-1, 6-0), John Robertson (6-0, 6-1), Stephen Sandoval (6-0, 6-0) and Chris Ghadimi (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles, the Vaqueros got wins from Hess and Pope (8-1), Masaki Kimura and Sandoval (8-2) and Harant Agakhanyan and Ghadimi (8-0).

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

Glendale Community College 11, Victor Valley 9: What was supposed to have been a double-header ended with only one game and a victory for the Vaqueros in Western State South Conference action at the Glendale Sports Complex on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

GCC improved to 4-9 and 2-2 in conference play.
