Sahakian announces bid for Glendale Unified School District’s board

With about six months remaining before local voters go to the polls to elect members of the Glendale Unified School District’s board, Shant Sahakian announced on Tuesday his intent to run for a seat.

The April 17 election will also mark the first time candidates will run in a district-based election, and Sahakian is running for District D, which encompasses homes located within in the 91205 and 91206 zip codes, including the Adams Hill and Glenoaks Canyon neighborhoods.

In recent years, Sahakian, a 2003 Hoover High School graduate, has emerged as an active volunteer for several local organizations.

He recently served as vice president of Glendale Kiwanis Club and was co-chair of the Armenian National Committee of America Professional Network.

Currently, he’s president of the Glendale Parks and Open Space Foundation, serves as chair of the Glendale Youth Alliance and belongs to Glendale Unified’s student attendance review board.

He’s also a member of Ascencia’s board of directors and belongs to the Armenian American Museum‘s development committee.

Earlier this year, the Glendale Chamber of Commerce named him “Man of the Year,” roughly two years after he was recognized by the Glendale Educational Foundation during a fundraising dinner in which he was awarded the foundation’s Hope Diamond Award, which honors Glendale Unified graduates.

In Glendale, Sahakian runs Sedna Solutions, a business he established at age 14, and one that evolved from Sahakian designing websites for small, local businesses out of his bedroom into operating a full-fledged marketing, design and public relations company on Central Avenue.

If he’s elected to the board, Sahakian said he is hopeful he can play a part in strengthening students’ educational opportunities, according to a statement he released Tuesday.

“My goal is to ensure that the high-quality education I was provided as a student is strengthened, improved and modernized for the next generation of Glendale Unified School District students,” he said. “I’ve seen firsthand what our students can achieve when they’re given the support they need to succeed, and I’m grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to the community that has given me so much.”
