Just before 6 p.m., firefighters nearby Robert Lundigan Park heard shots fired and responded to the park, where the victim was in the street with a gunshot wound, said Burbank Police Sgt. Claudio Losacco.

Arrests made after Burbank park shooting

Burbank police have arrested two suspects who are believed to be the triggerman and the instigator of a gang-related shooting at Lundigan Park Thursday evening, officials said. Police believe Erik Manooki, a 19-year-old gang member from Sunland, urged by 22-year-old Candice Richardson of Burbank in an act of gang retaliation, shot a 21-year-old man Thursday evening at the park. Home robbery suspects arrested

A pair of Pasadena men were arrested Thursday night after reportedly breaking into a Glendale home, occupied by a mother and her two young children, then fleeing through neighboring yards before they were finally apprehended, police said. Joshua Muema and Michael McCray were arrested and booked on suspicion of burglary. Both have “extensive” criminal histories, according to the release, with McCray serving prison time for robbery and Muema currently on parole for residential burglary. Glendale News-Press

Attorney pleads on his day in court

A Glendale attorney pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges that he attempted to extort $2 million from the brother of a bakery owner who had been suspected of shooting two of the attorney’s clients, officials said. Armen Tashjian was representing two victims in a triple shooting that occurred at a North Hollywood body shop in April 2014. Glendale News-Press

Glendale City Council OKs cell towers

A pair of Verizon cellphone towers will be installed at two local parks following City Council approval on Tuesday. A monopole will be set up at Fremont Park, while a monoshrub will be placed at Scholl Canyon Ballfield after council members voted 4-0. In return, Verizon would pay an annual lease of $36,000 for each site that will go toward maintaining the parks. Glendale News-Press

Burbank takes home Golden Mike

To help introduce an initiative to encourage programs to prepare Burbank’s workforce for “the real-world demands of an increasingly technical and rapidly changing workplace” then-Mayor David Gordon debuted a 13-minute video during his 2014 State of the City address highlighting training efforts in San Bernardino. Recently, the video — produced by the city’s public information office and narrated by Gordon — earned a Golden Mike award for “Best in Business and Consumer Reporting” during the Radio & Television News Assn. of Southern California’s 66th annual awards ceremony in Universal City. Glendale’s receives tobacco report card

For the seventh straight year, Glendale received an “A” on the American Lung Assn.’s State Tobacco Control report card. The annual report grades California cities on categories such as enforcing outdoor smoke-free areas and reducing the sales of tobacco products. Glendale was only one of seven cities to earn the highest grade. Neighboring Burbank received a “B” grade. Glendale News-Press

Pay up

A Sacramento judge’s final ruling was made in favor of Glendale in its dispute with the state’s Department of Finance over $40 million the city is owed. Superior Court Judge Shelleyanne Chang said in her decision the finance department abused its discretion when it refused to make payments to the city of Glendale that it promised for services such as road maintenance. Last week, La Cañada Elementary School sixth-grader Gabriel Gottheim proved he was a man of his word — several words, actually — when he pulled off a win at La Cañada Unified’s annual districtwide spelling bee. Gottheim beat 15 other competitors at the Jan. 27 event, each of them fourth- through sixth-graders who’d advanced from earlier school-site spelling bees. La Cañada Valley Sun

Campus closed

The U.S. Department of Education’s announcement Monday that it would cut federal funding to about two dozen arinello Schools of Beauty campuses in California and Nevada. On Thursday, the campus in Burbank became one of those shuttered. Burbank Leader

Deal nearly there

USC Verdugo Hills Hospital has reached a tentative agreement on a three-year contract with the Service Employees International Union. Union members are expected to vote on the contract within the next week. If ratified, the contract will be in effect through January 2019. Glendale News-Press
