Let’s not do lunch

Counselors who advise students in academics or assist them with personal challenges at Burbank’s three middle schools made a plea to Burbank Unified officials recently when they asked to be relieved of also supervising students during lunch. The dual role that middle school counselors carry has led some to take on disciplinarian roles they do not want because it could stifle their relationships with students. Burbank Leader

Celebrating Cesar Chavez

Latino culture was front and center at the Pacific Community Center on Saturday for Glendale’s 15th annual Cesar Chavez celebration, which featured live music, children’s games and free Mexican food. Glendale News-Press

Local nurse killed in crash

On the morning of March 9, Kimberly Ann Jackson, a neonatal intensive-care unit nurse at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, died in a car accident in Palmdale. Jackson left behind her husband and a teenage daughter and son. To help with her children’s education costs, the nonprofit Fire Family Foundation started a fund where people can donate money to the family. Burbank Leader

Charity basketball game set for Sunday

The sixth annual Salvation Army Hoop Heroes basketball game between Glendale firefighters and the Glendale Police Department will be held at around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday in the gymnasium at Glendale High School, 1440 E. Broadway. The event benefits the Salvation Army’s after-school program called the Zone, which is designed for youth ages 8 to 13. Glendale News-Press

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is suing a Glendale attorney, alleging that he bilked at least four “unsuspecting” investors out of $6 million through bogus investment contracts, records show. Glendale News-Press

Man arrested after allegedly assaulting homeless woman

A 21-year-old reputed gang member was arrested Saturday after allegedly knocking a homeless woman unconscious after she witnessed him assault his girlfriend and called the police. Glendale News-Press

Man arrested for allegedly masturbating in front of teen girl

A 35-year-old Glendale man was arrested Saturday after allegedly masturbating in front of a teenager in a La Crescenta neighborhood, and police are now looking for more victims. Glendale News-Press

Explicit photos of unconcious women lead to arrests

Two 23-year-old men were arrested after Glendale police found explicit photographs of them with women who were unconscious, one of which was reportedly posted on Facebook, police said. Glendale News-Press

Council opts to keep mayor selection method in place

During a meeting last week, Burbank City Council members unanimously decided not to move forward with adopting a new method of selecting which council members get the mayor and vice-mayor spots. Burbank Leader

Drought charge remains at 75 cents

A drought charge on local water bills will not be increased, the Glendale City Council decided Tuesday, because the existing fee continues to cover a decline in revenues, according to the city’s top utility official. Glendale News-Press

Albertsons back in business on Foothill Boulevard

Just over a year after changing a Foothill Boulevard storefront to Haggen Food & Pharmacy, Albertsons has moved back into the location. The ownership change happened at the start of the month and came about after Pacific Northwest-based Haggen filed for bankruptcy last September and closed all but 37 of the 146 Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions and Albertsons stores it had purchased about 150 days earlier.
