Sports Roundup: St. Francis basketball gets back to winning

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

St. Francis 61, Salesian 39: It’s been a tough season for the Golden Knights, but they enjoyed a nice victory Saturday evening in nonleague play.

Six players scored nine or more points for St. Francis, which improved to 4-11.

St. Genevieve 56, Flintridge Prep 39: The Rebels fell in nonleague action Saturday afternoon in the Moorpark Showcase.

With the defeat, Flintridge Prep dropped to 10-3.

WRESTLING

Hoover at Arroyo Classic: It was a 16th-place finish for the Tornadoes on Saturday afternoon at the tournament in El Monte.

Hoover finished 51 points, which was third among participating Rio Hondo League teams and trailed La Cañada (72 points) and Monrovia (62 points).

Narek Zamanayan led the way for the Tornadoes by placing third at 138 pounds.
Zamanayan was 3-1 with three pins and only fell short of reaching the championship by losing in the championship semifinals via a pin by Mayfair’s Khalil Howard.

At 126 pounds, Karlen Hakobyan finished 2-2 and earned fifth place, while Chris White took seventh at 220 pounds with two victories in the consolation bracket.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Glendale Community College 87, West Los Angeles 86: The Vaqueros picked up a tight Western State Conference South victory Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Glendale improved to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

West Los Angeles 70, Glendale Community College 62: There was no late rally for the Vaqueros, who fell in Western State Conference South play Saturday afternoon.

Glendale (3-12 overall, 0-2 in conference) trailed by 10 points at halftime and did not recover despite the duo of Mary Karapetyan and Luna Panosian each scoring 15 points. Halia Kekahuna contributed 10 points for the Vaqueros.
