Meaux one of country’s top seniors
GLENDALE — The following are odds and ends from the local sports scene.
GLENDALE GRAD GETS
PRESEASON HONOR
After getting drafted in the 44th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft in June, Glendale High graduate Jesse Meaux subsequently decided to return to play his senior season at UC Santa Barbara rather than sign with the Philadelphia Phillies.
His decision will see him enter his senior year with quite a bit of hype surrounding him, as he was named as one of the top 50 seniors in collegiate baseball by Baseball America on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-4 right-hander was an All-Big West Conference honorable mention selection last season.
Meaux went 8-3 as a junior with a 4.41 earned-run average.
“We are all excited and grateful that Jesse decided to come back for his senior year,” UCSB head coach Bob Brontsema told the college’s website. “We are looking forward to him heading the staff and leading the team into the postseason.”
Meaux is likely to be the Gauchos’ No. 1 starter when the season begins on Feb. 18.
CVSC CELEBRATES
ELITE EIGHT
With the backdrop of National Signing Day on Wednesday, the Crescenta Valley Soccer Club celebrated eight of its players earning spots to play college soccer at its ceremonial signing night.
“I’m very happy for the girls,” said CVSC Director of Coaching Reggie Rivas, the former CV High coach, “and I’m extremely excited for the direction the club’s heading with another great class.”
Crescenta Valley High senior Jordan Royer, a past All-Area, All-CIF and All-Pacific League selection, was one of the eight, as she will play at Chapman University.
Mariah Winters, Taryn Lathrop, Nikki Campbell, Alyssa Dodson, Delani Curtis, Juliette Austin and Hallie White also committed to colleges.
Curtis, a former La Crescenta resident who know lives in Bakersfield, will play at Aurora University.
Winters, a Burbank resident who plays for Sherman Oaks Notre Dame and is ranked as one of the National Top 100 by Top Drawer Soccer.com, is headed to Boston College, while Burroughs High’s White will play at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Dodson of Royal High and Campbell are both headed for CSU Stanislaus, while Royal High’s Lathrop is going to New Mexico State. Austin is venturing north to the University of North Dakota.
GHOST WITHOUT
A FIGHT
Glendale boxer Gapo “The Ghost” Tolmajyan was originally scheduled to fight tonight on a “ShoBox” card at the Chumash Casino, but the fight fell through.
He was tentatively scheduled to fight Marvin Quintero (20-3, 16 KOs) in an eight-round lightweight bout that would have likely been the Glendale Fighting Club product’s toughest bout to date.
Tolmajyan is 10-1 with three knockouts to his credit and last fought on Oct. 1, also at Chumash, and handily decisioned Yogli Herrera in a six-round affair.
Elsewhere in the Glendale fighting scene, NABO and NABF champion Vanes Martirosyan, who is also the No. 1 ranked WBO contender, had a proposed bout for Saturday fall through weeks ago and is now, reportedly, seeking a fight in March.
Martirosyan’s last fight was a unanimous decision win over Joe Greene on June 5, 2010, meaning his next bout, whenever it eventually is, will come after the longest layoff of his professional career.
