John Huh ties for third at Wyndham Championship
John Huh appeared to be in good position to win his first PGA Tournament in nearly 18 months entering the final round of the Wyndham Championship on Sunday.
Huh, a 2008 Crescenta Valley High graduate and the reigning PGA Rookie of the Year, was tied for first with a 10-under-par 200 through three rounds with Patrick Reed at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
Unfortunately for Huh, his bid to win his second PGA Tour event came to an end after he carded a two-under-par 68 to tie for third with Brian Harman.
Reed won the championship for his first title, edging Jordan Spieth with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff.
Huh, who helped Crescenta Valley’s boys’ golf team win Pacific League championships in 2006 and 2007, was vying for his first title since capturing the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, in February 2012.
Eight players began the round within two strokes of the lead. Huh finished the final round with five birdies, three bogeys and 10 pars. Huh bogeyed the par-4 17th and 18 holes to slip out of title contention. Earlier, Huh posted birdies on the first, ninth, 10th, 12th and 15th holes.
Huh shot even-par or better in each round. He began the tournament with a 68 on Thursday before recording a career-best 62 on Friday, followed by a 70 on Saturday. He had a triple-bogey on the second hole Saturday before finishing off his round on a positive note.
Huh, who earlier in the season competed in all four major championships, earned $307,400 in prize money. It was his second top-10 finish in 2013 and his first since placing eighth in the HP Byron Nelson Championship in May.
He missed the cut in his previous four appearances, including the 95th rendition of the PGA Championship the previous week in Rochester, N.Y. Huh has made the cut in 14 of 25 events in 2013.
