Unemployment rates in tri-city area jump despite statewide trend

Share

Unemployment rates rose throughout the tri-city region in July, with some communities reporting up to a 0.7% jump, according to the latest labor statistics released by the state Friday.

Glendale and Burbank both saw 0.7% hikes in their jobless numbers, increasing to 10.4% and 9.7%, respectively, according to the report released by the California Employment Development Department.

Pasadena wasn’t far behind with a 0.6% rise, climbing to 9.1%.

Some of the biggest job losses were reported in government, furniture manufacturing and electronics stores, according to the report.

Statewide, the jobless rate for July remained flat at 10.7%, but that’s an improvement from a year ago when it stood at 11.9%. The worsening job picture locally stood in contrast to the overall

California figures, which showed employers adding 25,200 nonfarm jobs in July.

The unemployment rate in the La Crescenta-Montrose area rose to 5.9% -- a 0.5% increase -- while La Cañada Flintridge saw a 0.3% uptick to 4.6%.

The jobless rates in San Marino and South Pasadena increased by 0.4%, to 5.4% and 5.9%, respectively.
