Firefighters extinguish 134 Freeway blaze that briefly threatened homes

A brush fire that broke out just north of the Ventura (134) Freeway Tuesday climbed a nearby hillside and briefly threatened homes in adjacent Glendale before it was extinguished shortly after noon, officials reported.

The fire, reported at 10:48 a.m. near the westbound lanes in Eagle Rock, prompted authorities to prepare residents on Sleepy Hollow Drive in Glenoaks Canyon to evacuate as water-dropping helicopters and ground crews from several fire agencies, including Glendale, battled the slow-moving blaze.

Firefighters were able to contain the blaze to several acres roughly 1 1/2 hour later. No evacuations were ordered and no injuries were reported. There were also no immediate reports of damage to structures.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.
