About 600 people signed up to test for eight open Glendale police officer positions at the Civic Auditorium on Thursday. The crowd was nearly double what similar hiring events typically attract, police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

“We’ll get 300 or 400, but not 600 for one test,” he said, adding that this was an open application process.

City Hall recently shaved about 130 positions through early retirements and layoffs as it moved to close a $15.4-million budget gap. Public safety personnel, though, were not allowed to take the early retirement option.
