Police detained the father of student at Glenoaks Elementary School in Glendale Friday after he attempted to walk onto campus and was confronted by staffers, officials said.
Few details were available about the man, who tried to walk on to the campus in the 2000 block of East Glenoaks Boulevard at about noon before being met by school staff, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.
As police responded to the school, the man had already gotten into his vehicle when officers arrived and detained him, Lorenz said.
[Updated 1:50 p.m.: Police later in the day said the man actually fled on foot. He was eventually arrested, but an officer suffered a broken wrist in the process.]
Glenoaks Elementary was briefly placed on lockdown, but no one was harmed, an official at the school said.
The incident occurred as school officials across the region remained on heightened alert on the one week anniversary of the deadly mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., in which 20 first-graders were gunned down.
Lorenz said employees at the school took measures to keep the campus safe, even if there didn't appear to be a threat.
"At least we know everything's working," he said.
