Undercover Laguna Beach police officers cited five people for smoking in an open space Saturday, according to a news release.

The individuals were in an area called Carolyn Wood View Knoll, at the end of Alta Laguna Boulevard, the release said.

Separately, police contacted several people who were in Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park after dusk, a violation of county law.

Laguna Beach is stepping up enforcement as the police and fire departments and Orange County park rangers prepare to coordinate additional undercover operations.

Efforts are focusing on patrolling certain areas after dark. It is believed that most of the smoking is occurring at night, the release said.

Visitors may be videotaped by cameras intended to monitor open areas for fires.

The wilderness park is open from 7 a.m. to sunset, and no smoking, alcohol, camping or campfires are allowed. Dogs must stay on designated trails.
