A 23-year-old man was charged Tuesday in connection with shots fired at people gathered on a balcony outside a Newport Beach home, authorities said.

Matthew Allen Boyd, of Newport Beach, had been involved in a fight with multiple people at a house in the 5100 block of Seashore Drive early Sunday, police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

She said Boyd left the house and returned with a gun about 2:22 a.m., adding that he fired five shots in the general direction of the balcony, where people from the fight were congregating. No injuries were reported.

Boyd fled the scene, but Newport police found and arrested him, Manzella said.

Police declined to identify the type of gun used by Boyd, Manzella said.

The Orange County district attorney’s office on Tuesday charged Boyd with two felonies: shooting at an inhabited dwelling and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

Boyd, who works as a busboy, according to jail records, is being held on $250,000 bail in Orange County Central Men’s Jail in Santa Ana.

He could face up to seven years in state prison if convicted.
