College Roundup: Vanguard women’s basketball upset by The Master’s

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 69, Vanguard 67

SANTA CLARITA — The No. 4-ranked Lions, who won the Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season title, were upset by the No. 19-ranked Mustangs in the GSAC Tournament semifinals on Saturday at the Mustangs’ gym.

TMU (22-7), which gained the right to host the game having been predetermined as the host site for the quarterfinals and semifinals, saw its lead trimmed to two with 10 seconds left.

The Mustangs missed a subsequent free-throw to give Vanguard a shot, but the Lions missed in the lane at the buzzer and were eliminated from the tournament.

The Lions will move on to the NAIA Tournament, March 15-21, at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont.

Senior Claire Lamunu led the Lions with 16 points and 12 rebounds for her 23rd double-double of the season.

Kandyce Smith and Christiana Gerostergiou had 11 points apiece for Vanguard.

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 6, Portland 3

Evan Cassolato and Mikey Duarte each had three hits and combined to drive in three runs to lead the host Anteaters in the nonconference game Saturday.

Ryan Johnston pitched two scoreless relief innings to earn the win for UCI (5-4).

Freshman Andre Pallante struck out six in three scoreless innings to record his first save.

Portland is 1-8.

The series is scheduled to conclude on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Doubleheader

Vanguard University senior Shane Elias-Calles went six for seven to help the host No. 20-ranked Lions sweep Hope International in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday.

The Lions (16-8, 11-1 in conference), won the first game, 4-1, then prevailed, 5-1, in the second.

Starting pitchers Chris Lumanlan and Tyler Steele notched victories to improve to 4-1 and 6-0, respectively.

Brandon Sandoval (four for six with one run batted in), Brock Eissman (three for eight with one home run and four RBIs) and Michael Fuchs (four for eight) also had big days for the Lions.

Hope is 9-6, 7-5.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University blanked Antelope Valley, 8-0, and 4-0, to earn the nonconference sweep on Saturday.

Payton Ross was four for four in the first game and two for four with one run batted in in the second for the Lions (16-4).

Vanessa Dwyer allowed two hits in five innings to improve to 8-1 in the opener, while Kolbi Tonini yielded six hits in seven innings to win Game 2.

Antelope Valley is 1-11.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Michigan tournament

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — UC Irvine defeated Bucknell, 16-4, and Hartwick, 11-7, on Saturday at the University of Michigan.

The No. 6-ranked Anteaters are 11-6.
