Foundation calls for scholarship review

The Community Foundation of the Verdugos reminds students to review scholarships they may be eligible for by visiting www.communityfoundationoftheverdugos.org.

Featured scholarships include the Glendale Latino Association awards, open to students of Latino heritage graduating from a public or private schools in Glendale. The deadline is March 23.

The Gonzales Harris Bilingual Scholarships are open to graduating students who speak English and Spanish and who attend public or private high schools in Glendale, Burbank and foothill communities. The deadline is March 9.

The Glendale Scholarship Endowment, established by Chuck and Lois Sambar, provides awards to students who have overcome obstacles and need a helping hand to ignite college dreams. The deadline is March 9.

The First Christian Scholarship Awards have a deadline of March 9.

The Burrows Memorial Scholarship awards have a March 19 deadline for students graduating from high schools in La Crescenta and La Cañada Flintridge.

Fashion show to benefit charities

Oakmont League announced that fashion designer Lourdes Chavez will present her designs at the league’s “Springtime in Paris” fashion show and luncheon on March 6 at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City.

Chavez was sole designer for the Travilla before opening her own design house, Lourdes Chavez Collections. She has created designs for several television series and outfits worn by Linda Evans in “Dynasty.”

Opportunity prizes available at the luncheon include a New Orleans trip for two at the Royal Sonesta Hotel for four nights, a Santa Rosa wine country trip for two and Las Vegas trip for two.

Carolyn Beaton and Lynn Dittrick serve as co-chairs for the fashion show benefit.

Oakmont League is one of the oldest philanthropic organizations in Glendale. All proceeds from the event will benefit Glendale area charities and scholarships.

APS announces new board, initiatives

The Armenian Professional Society installed its new executive board and announced new initiatives for 2012 Jan. 28 at the Bistro Garden in Studio City.

Angelo Ghailian, president-elect of the board, began the evening’s program by thanking supporters and recognizing past presidents of the APS in attendance.

Former APS president Stephan Bagboudarian presented candidates for the Executive Board of 2012. The members include Angelo Ghailian as president, Taline Hanna as first vice president, Lily Kazarians as second vice president and Ani Petrossian as treasurer. Seta Khajarian was selected as scholarship chair and Lara Yacoubian was selected as event coordinator.

Proposed activities for 2012 include concerts at the Disney Concert Hall and Hollywood Bowl. There are planned membership drives, guest lectures on topics such as medicine, engineering, green energy and the arts, in addition to the annual luau party and “Professional of the Year” banquet.

The APS will also focus its efforts to coordinate with the other Armenian organizations to develop stronger ties with the community in pursuit of increased visibility and esteem. The APS will also provide a mentoring program that will foster young graduates to excel in their professions.

The APS is an independent, non-partisan organization founded in 1958 to promote fellowship among Armenian professionals and to encourage and foster higher education in young Armenians. APS activities include annual grants and scholarships to universities in Armenia, and to graduate students in the United States. Regularly scheduled meetings cover a range of professional, cultural, and other topics of interest to its membership.
