Women given kudos by legislators

Several local women are among 30 who will be honored during the 13th annual Women in Business Legislative Update and Awards luncheon on Friday at the Pasadena Hilton.

The women were selected by State Sen. Carol Liu (D-La Cañada-Flintridge) and Assembly members Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles), and Anthony Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) for their contributions to the vitality and diversity of the 21st State Senate and 43rd and 44th Assembly districts.

Those being honored are Outstanding Small Businesswoman, Emma Garabetian, Modella Uniforms, Pasadena/La Crescenta; Outstanding Junior Businesswoman Linda P. Lee, Charles Dunn Co., Glendale; Outstanding Non-Profit Employee, Ana Gomez, Kids Community Dental Clinic, Burbank; and Ramella Markarian, Glendale Adventist Medical Center, Glendale; Environment/Energy Efficiency Award, Hilda Morovati Pirim, EmbroidMe, Glendale; Most Inspirational Award, Carolyn Rowley, Cayenne Wellness Center, Glendale; Woman in Law, Lt. Lola Abrahamian, Glendale Police Department; Women in Science and Technology, Linh Chen, Glendale Adventist Medical Center and Cheryl Lee Jung, Glendale Adventist Medical Center; Woman in Arts Entertainment, Taline Bessos, Taline Music, Glendale.

Assistance League gives scholarships

Eight women have received scholarships from Assistance League of Glendale, a tradition the league has continued the practice for 50 years.

Currently one scholarship is awarded to a senior at each Glendale high school. Three awards are given to students at Glendale Community College. The scholarships are $1,000 each. Recipients are selected based on school leadership, community service, grade point average and financial need.

The recipients are: Juliana Kim, GCC; Carleigh Fernandez, Crescenta Valley High; Alisha Stone, Verdugo Academy; Evelyna Vartanians, Hoover High; Jessica Joy Palacios, Clark Magnet; Anik Khochou, GCC; Verzhine Chaparyan, GCC; and Selenia Corado, Glendale High.

Rotary bingo night benefits war memorial

Crescenta Canada Rotary Club is combining with the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion to raise funds for the War Veterans Memorial with a bingo night this Friday at Holy Redeemer Church, 2411 Montrose Ave., Montrose.

Social hour is from 6 p.m. followed by bingo at 7. There will be snacks, pizza and hamburgers. The cost is $10 and each ticket is good for 10 games and a raffle ticket.

If guests would like to sponsor a game, they can call the numbers. Sponsorships are available for $100. All funds raised will be donated to the War Memorial fund to ensure that construction can start this year and be completed in time for Memorial Day 2013.
