On the Town: Women achievers get time in the spotlight

Share

Thirty Women Achievers can also be called cover girls. They will grace the cover of the next issue of Business Life magazine.

The women representing Glendale, Burbank and Pasadena were introduced at the top of the Glendale Hilton. On Thursday, as magazine vice president of marketing Greg Krikorian played master of ceremonies, each woman was given her turn in the spotlight to briefly describe her background.

Four of the achievers from Glendale were Laurel Patric, Melina Sardar, Gayle Craig and Karine Bagdasarian.

Patric is the president of the Glendale Educational Foundation. For 34 years she was the director of library services at the Glendale Public Library.

Sardar is an administrative analyst with the city of Glendale. In her spare time she is also a youth coach at the Ark Family Center in Glendale.

Craig is special events and annual giving coordinator of the Glendale Adventist Medical Center Health Care Foundation. She is also an active member of Soroptimist International of Glendale. In that position, she has chaired the popular Bras for a Cause fundraiser.

Bagdasarian is president of the Dr. Norick Bogossian Center Cancer Care Guild.

Also announced was a new scholarship in the name and memory of Julie Burroughs Shermer. The scholarship will go to a college woman in leadership from Glendale, Burbank or Pasadena. The recipient will be announced at the Women Achievers Business & Health Expo in September.

A modest John Krikorian was present at the reception but stayed behind the scenes. He is editor-in-chief of Business Life. Son Greg has worked with him at the magazine for 23 years.

The “Saluting Women Achievers Luncheon,” as part of the Women Achievers Business & Health Expo, will be Sept. 27, also at the Glendale Hilton. It’s expected to be a sell-out.

It was the night of the Iguanas Ranas Tacos on Brand on Aug. 22. There, a couple dozen members and friends dropped by Glendale Latino Assn.’s monthly mixer. A bevy of taco appetizers satisfied. But watch that salsa — it’s hot! The word went out to bring a drawing prize with which the donor would get their business recognized. Post-appetizers, Immediate Past President Amy Navarrete presided over the drawing. Favorites included a bottle or two of fine wine. Proceeds from the tickets sold are earmarked for student scholarships.

Association President Nancy Guillen made sure all went smoothly. Just-married Vice President Arlene Villarin assisted her. Navarrete, a vision in red, greeted visitors. Association members from Glendale on hand included Monica and Jose Sierra, Miryam Finkelberg, John Simpson, Martha Rivera, Denise Miller, Marilyn Gunnell and Carlos Carrillo snapping photos for posterity.

More Glendale visitors were Lisa Raggio and Sharon Roth, new Executive Director of Glendale Healthy Kids.

More than $16,000 in scholarships were awarded by the GLA to students within the Glendale Unified School District and Glendale Community College earlier this year.
