Glendale man killed crossing street is identified

The 83-year-old man who died Monday after being struck by a minivan in Glendale was identified this week as Kourkin Anouchian.

Los Angeles County coroner’s officials on Thursday said his body was scheduled to be examined soon to determine the nature of his fatal injuries.

Anouchian, a Glendale resident, was pronounced dead at Glendale Adventist Medical Center after the collision at Broadway and Maynard Street.

Anouchian was walking about 4:10 p.m. in an unmarked crosswalk at the intersection when 40-year-old motorist Sana Hussein failed to stop and struck him with her minivan, Glendale police said.

Hussein, of Glendale, immediately stopped at the scene, police said.

Anouchian’s death was the first pedestrian fatality in Glendale this year.

Tonya Kisishvili, 70, of Glendale, was the only pedestrian fatality last year after stepping off a curb against a red light at Central and California avenues, where she was struck by a delivery truck, police said. Kisishvili later died at the hospital due to major injuries sustained in the collision.

Glendale has had 88 pedestrian-involved accidents this year, according to Police Department statistics.

Police received more than $600,000 in grant funding this year to pay for pedestrian education, motorcycle safety enforcement, sobriety checkpoints and operations aimed at distracted drivers and motorists who are driving under the influence.
