Glendale sues resident in favor of Measure N

The city of Glendale is suing one of the main proponents of a ballot measure to repeal the city’s utility users tax, alleging he used inaccurate information that could mislead voters ahead of an election in June. A complaint filed by City Clerk Ardy Kassakhian states resident Bill Taliaferro listed incorrect data when he wrote an argument in favor of Measure N that is slated to be placed on the ballot. Burbank says hands tied on sober-living facilities

During the past two years, Burbank residents have expressed concerns about sober-living facilities setting up shop in their neighborhoods, fearing that recovering drug addicts and alcoholics would negatively impact their standard of living. During a meeting with city officials and an attorney Thursday, residents said they were baffled to hear that most people looking to establish a sober-living facility are not required to get a permit from the city to operate. Schiff seeks funds got quake warning system

Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) and Susan DelBene (D-WA) on Wednesday pressed the House Appropriations Committee for increased federal funding to build and maintain an early warning system for earthquakes along the West Coast. “It is imperative that Congress help to fund construction and continued maintenance of an earthquake early warning system along the West Coast,” Rep. Liu’s law strengthen rights of homeless

In a legislative bid to prevent discrimination against the homeless, state Sen. Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge) has authored a bill prohibiting members of law enforcement from citing or arresting such individuals for eating, resting and practicing their religion in California’s public spaces. “Being homeless should not be a crime,” Liu said in an email interview Monday. “(Under this measure) local authorities can’t cite a homeless person for doing the same thing that any other person would be allowed to do, like eating or resting, in a public space.” La Cañada Valley Sun

GUSD to add new recycled water pipelines

Glendale city officials expect to eventually save nearly 18 million gallons of potable water each year after crews install new recycled water pipelines to irrigate three Glendale schools. Hoover High, Toll Middle and Mark Keppel Elementary schools will join five Glendale Unified schools that already tap into recycled water, in addition to Glendale Community College. A La Crescenta mother shared her story of being scammed into wiring money to Mexico after fraudsters called her and convinced her they were holdinf her teen daughter hostage. Police say scams like this aren’t new and warned residents what to look out for. Glendale News-Press

Kids put on their dancing shoes

About a dozen toddlers and preschoolers jumped, shook, danced and yelled their hearts out on Thursday during the Rhythm and Reading program at the Buena Vista Branch Library in Burbank. The free event, held at the library twice a month, is a way to help develop rhythm with words and teach them how to follow directions, said Tina Sahadi, a children’s librarian at the Buena Vista branch who started the program last fall.
