All-Area Girls’ Basketball First Team

Sophia Hathaway, Sophomore, South Pasadena

Just a sophomore, she proved her worth for the Tigers and earned first-team accolades in the Rio Hondo League. She was a rebounding machine, averaging 11.9 a contest. In addition, the sophomore averaged 10.2 points and two blocks a contest.

Kayla Pounds, Senior, Blair

The All-Area Player of the Year candidate did some of her best work in the Rio Hondo League and was rewarded as the league’s player of the year. Along with averaging 24.2 points and 12.3 rebounds a game, she also scored 40 or more points in three contests.

Aysia Shellmire, Senior, Burroughs

Was a force in the middle for the Indians, helping them to a share of the Pacific League championship and earning co-Pacific League Player of the Year honors. Along with averaging 19.9 points a game, she also averaged eight rebounds and two steals.

Kandyce Smith, Junior, La Salle

Stepped up and led the way for the Lancers, who advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs. The junior earned All-Del Rey League first-team honors, as she averaged 17 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals.

Kiki Yang, Sophomore, Pasadena Poly

The sophomore showed her skills by excelling in the Prep League and earning player of the year honors while guiding the Tigers to a fifth straight title. Her 18.4 points, 6.1 steals, 4.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds filled up the stat line every game.

CO-COACHES OF THE YEAR

Kevin Kiyomura and Jamye Kiyomura Chan, Flintridge Prep

The two helped guide the Rebels to a wildly successful season and an impressive run to the CIF Southern Section Division V-AA semifinals, where they lost to powerhouse Sierra Canyon. In addition, Flintridge Prep placed second in the Prep League and made an appearance in the state tournament, all in the first year under the helm of the new coaches, who took over a program that had just seven wins the season prior and finished 19-10.
