Artists help blow out the Bat-candles for superhero’s 75th anniversary

The Dark Knight will soon be coming in an art form to a gallery near you — no Bat Signal needed.

The South Pasadena Mercantile Company is celebrating the 75th anniversary of Batman with a pop-up art show this weekend, titled “Long Summer, Dark Knight.”

The exhibit, curated by South Pasadena-based artist and illustrator Tony Wong, features art in a variety of media. “I wanted to do something with friends and up-and coming illustrators and students who have a very high potential … and showcase their work,” Wong said.

The pop-up show is the third in a series that helps introduce new people to the gallery and showroom, said Scott Gandell, illustrator and co-owner of the South Pasadena showroom, gallery and interior-design studio.

Previous exhibits in the series included a Star Wars anniversary show, titled “May the 4th Be With you, Revenge of the Fifth,” in May, and a show in early June commemorating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ 30th anniversary.

The upcoming show will start with a preview event Friday night from 6 to 10 p.m., followed by Saturday’s event from noon to close, Gandell said.

The artists will be in and out throughout the day on Saturday as well, Gandell said. If any of the artwork is unsold after Saturday, it will stay up until the Comic-Con International convention in San Diego in July.

Gandell, who is also a professional illustrator and has done work for film and animation studios, co-owns the shop with Anneline De Croos, a graphic designer and interior designer.

The exhibit will feature artwork from about 10 artists, Wong said.

“There’s a lot of humorous type of work because with Batman or Superman or any of these superheroes, we usually see them in a serious situation,” Wong said. “If you put them in different situations, you can kind of relate to them.”
