Briefly In Business: Chamber offers Business Showcase

The Glendale Chamber of Commerce offers local businesses a chance to grow in the current competitive marketplace with its Business Showcase 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 20. The event will be at the Glendale Civic Auditorium, 1401 N. Verdugo Road.

Businesses can rent exhibit space to showcase products and services. Sponsorships are also available. Many popular Glendale restaurants will offer complimentary samples of their fare.

Bank names Cook regional VP

National Bank of California has named Sheila Cook regional vice president of the San Gabriel Valley office in Glendale.

Cook has been in the banking business for more than 30 years. Recently she served as regional manager for Gilmore Bank in La Cañada Flintridge and before that as manager of Citizens Business Bank, which has branches in Glendale and South Pasadena, according to a company announcement.

“I’m looking forward to contributing my time and talents to local community organizations and helping our area’s business community to thrive,” Cook said in a statement.

Grants available to help pay utility bills

Residents experiencing financial troubles can qualify for grants of up to $1,500 from Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas Co. through a new state program, “Temporary Energy Assistance for Families.”

The program, administered by the Salvation Army and paid for in part with federal stimulus dollars, allows qualified families to receive a one-time emergency energy credit of up to $1,500 to pay past due bills and avoid shut-offs.

Southern California Edison and The Gas Company each will have $10 million for the program. Applications will only be accepted through Sept. 21.
