City Briefs: Judy Wexler Quartet to perform; Glendale City Gold Championship

The Judy Wexler Quartet will perform at 7 p.m. Friday in the plaza at Brand Library and Arts Center, 1601 W. Mountain St., Glendale.

Vocalist Wexler will perform songs associated with a diverse mix of jazz and pop singers including King Pleasure, Louis Armstrong, Sonny Rollins, Richie Havens, Rickie Lee Jones and Bob Dylan.

This performance is part of a weekly series at the library that will run through August on Friday evenings.

An advanced gardening workshop will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Integrated Waste Management Facility, 548 W. Chevy Chase Drive.

Participants will learn about backyard composting, water-wise gardening, worm composting and grass cycling.

“Kases for Kids,” a collection of suitcases and backpacks which do not have to be new, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot at the Ralphs store at the corner of Foothill Boulevard and Raymond Avenue in La Crescenta.

Event organizers will also be collecting new school supplies, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes and other personal-care items to be put into the suitcases and backpacks to give to children going into foster care.

The Crescenta-Cañada Lions Club is working on this project in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Children Services.

Stepping Stone Players will present a performance called “Encores! Duos, Trios and Uh-Ohs?!” at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 at Boy Scouts of America Hall, 1325 Grandview Ave., Glendale.

The event, which will be a fundraiser for the theater troupe, will include performances by members of the group as well as some new faces.

A $20 donation is suggested.

The fourth annual Glendale City Golf Championship will be held Aug. 20 and 24 at the Scholl Canyon Golf Course, 3800 E. Glenoaks Blvd., Glendale.

There will be four flights. On Aug. 20, the low 16 in the championship flight and the low eight in the other three flights will advance to play in a tournament on Aug. 25 at the Oakmont Country Club, 3100 Country Club Drive, Glendale.
