Council approves $1.4M for Glendale street project near Ventura Freeway

A $1.4 million street improvement project along Glendale Avenue near the Ventura (134) Freeway was given the green light by the City Council this week.

The stretch of roadway near the freeway is one of the most traveled throughout the city with an estimated 50,000 trips per day expected for the street by 2030, according to a city report.

“As you all know from experience, it gets pretty clogged there,” Public Works Director Steve Zurn told the council at a meeting on Tuesday night, adding that the improvements have been in the planning stages for the greater part of his more than 25-year career at the city.

The project is slated to include a realignment of Coronado Drive at Monterey Road, installation of traffic striping and signage, removal of a concrete island on Glendale Avenue adjacent to Monterey Road, reconstruction of a concrete island at Monterey Road and removal and reconstruction of deteriorated sidewalks.

It is set to be paid for with Measure R funds, which come from a half-cent sales tax for transportation projects in Los Angeles County approved by voters in 2008.

The project isn’t set to start until next year and this week’s approval only put the money for the improvements in play.

City Engineer Roubik Golanian said that once construction does begin, it will take six months to complete.

Council members recommended that construction take place during off-hours, but Zurn said the stretch of road is busy both during the week and on the weekend so drivers will still feel extra congestion during construction.

“The drivers will appreciate the improvements,” Mayor Dave Weaver said.

Zurn replied: “When we’re done.”
