A handful of government officials will be at the Los Angeles Zoo Monday night to offer tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) and representatives from the Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Federal Trade Commission, Social Security Administration and U.S. Postal Inspection Service will speak at 7 p.m. in the zoo’s Witherbee Auditorium.

Identity theft is when personal information is stolen and used without that person’s permission and the victims who are most susceptible are seniors.

“With big data breaches, scams involving persons posing as federal agencies, and even pick-pocketing or dumpster-diving, there are more threats facing our personal information than ever before,” Schiff said in a statement.

“That’s why it’s important to learn how to avoid being the target or victim of identity theft. I’m hosting g a forum with the experts to help people learn what they need to do to protect themselves, their finances and future,” he added.

The Los Angeles Zoo is located at 5333 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles.
