Frances Boukidis on the mend for Northern Illinois soccer
The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level.
Frances Boukidis (Crescenta Valley High, 2010) junior, Northern Illinois soccer: The former Falcons offensive standout is leading the way for the Huskies this season, but her season hit a speed bump on Sunday against Central Michigan when she was fouled hard into the goal post, drawing a red card and never returning to the game.
Northern Illinois ultimately lost in double overtime, 2-1, falling to 6-5-2 overall and 2-2-2 in Mid-American Conference play.
On a far more positive note, Boukidis scored her first goal of the season on Sept. 28 to propel the Huskies to their first conference win, defeating Akron, 1-0.
Boukidis scored in the 14th minute and followed that score with an assist in a 1-1 tie against Buffalo two days later.
NIU returns to action Friday against Miami (Ohio) at home in another MAC contest. It’s uncertain if Boukidis will play, but she returned to practice on Wednesday.
Camille Coffey (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2011) sophomore, Fairfield University volleyball: The former All-Area standout put down 10 kills in the Stags’ 25-20, 25-6, 25-14 sweep of Marist College on Sunday.
The Stags are rolling, as Sunday’s win was their fifth straight as they improved to 12-7 and 7-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Coffey’s 128 kills and 2.46 per set are third-best on the team. She’s played in all 19 matches on the season, starting 15. In addition to her kill stats, she also has 12 assists, 168 digs and 16 total blocks.
A conference road match at Canisius is on deck Friday for Coffey and the Stags.
Chris Cabrera (St. Francis High, 2010) junior, Cal Lutheran football: A tackling machine in his days as a Golden Knight, Cabrera is quickly taking on that roll with Cal Lutheran.
The linebacker posted a game-high 14 tackles on Saturday in his team’s 45-35 win over Redlands that saw the Kingsmen improve to 3-1. Not far behind was another former St. Francis standout, Rian Younker, as the defensive end posted 10 tackles — the only other double-digit tackling performance on the day for either team.
The win improved Cal Lu to 2-0 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play, which the Kingsmen return to Saturday with a road game at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Cabrera is second on the team with 31 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss, while Younker has 26 tackles, four for a loss and a team-high 2.5 sacks.
Brian Trejo (Hoover High, 2009) senior, San Francisco State cross-country: Trejo, a former All-Area selection, was the Gators’ top finisher on Saturday in the 8K Crystal Springs Invitational in Belmont. He took 12th in the 81-runner field in 27 minutes 10 seconds. The Gators took third in the race.
Danny Mock (Crescenta Valley High, 2009) senior, Cal Lutheran water polo: Mock and the Kingsmen earned a split on Saturday at the Gary Troyer Tournament, dominating Washington & Jefferson, 21-7, before losing to Division I powerhouse UC Irvine, which is ranked fourth in the country, 14-6.
Mock tallied 11 saves in the victory over Washington & Jefferson, while he garnered six against Irvine.
Cal Lu returned to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday against Pomona-Pitzer. Entering the match, the Swordsmen were 9-8.
