Rain updates: Mud flow in Chevy Chase canyon, minimal delays at Bob Hope

[UPDATED 4:01 p.m.] As rain pounds the Southland, residents and public safety officials in the Burbank-Glendale-La Cañada region are dealing with a series of mostly minor incidents. Here’s a roundup of what’s happened so far:

• Crews temporarily closed the 2100 block of Chevy Chase and were diverting traffic due to minor mud flow late afternoon on Friday. The closure was a precautionary measure as crews worked secure the area, city spokesman Tom Lorenz said. Earlier this week, public safety officials expressed concerns of potential debris flows in the area of Wilson Terrace and Chevy Chase Canyon. A fire last May scorched 75 acres in the canyon, which prompted fire officials to prepare a debris flow plan for the area. Public Works crews will remain in the area throughout the night to monitor the canyon hillsides.

• The Perkins building in Glendale, which houses Glendale Water & Power and other public services, lost power this afternoon, city spokesman Tom Lorenz said. Crews were working on the outage, which not only affected the City Hall campus in the 600 block of East Broadway, but also impacted 1,400 Glendale Water & Power customers in the area. The Glendale Police Department also lost power, but an emergency generator was able to quickly restore it.

• In La Cañada, crews are working to clean up a partially collapsed hillside on Angeles Crest Highway, just west of La Canada Country Club, where apparently rocks and debris fell into the highway, halting traffic along the mountain road.

• The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, located in the 1900 block of Foothill Boulevard, was closed this morning due to a storm-related power outage. It is expected to reopen at 2 p.m., according to Craig Strazzeri, the Y’s director of healthy living. Strazzeri said that Y members are being updated about the situation via emails and Facebook.

• In La Crescenta, power shut off at about 9:20 a.m. at Rosemont Middle School. As of 10:15 a.m., the school remained in the dark. Asst. Principal Jackie Scott said administrators are walking the campus to ensure students and teachers safety, and flashlights are being passed out.

• Flights are on a regular schedule at Bob Hope Airport, according to spokesman Victor Gill, with minimal delays.

• Also in La Crescenta, residents are receiving reverse 911 calls warning residents of a flash flood warning in effect until 12:30 p.m. Resident Shari Ely said she has received three separate calls Friday morning.
