Glendale Community College cross-country teams take second, third

Two top-three team finishes for the Glendale Community College men’s and women’s cross-country squads highlighted a day of strong finishes at the Southern California Championship Preview Meet at Santa Clarita’s Central Park.

The Vaqueros’ women’s squad led the way Friday as Glendale finished runner-up in the three-mile race to defending Southern California champion Orange Coast College, 40-99.

This year’s SoCal championship is back at Central Park on Nov. 9.

Sophomore Elizabeth Nelson was Glendale’s top runner for a third straight meet, taking fourth in 19 minutes, 28 seconds.

Freshman Glyndyll Mancia finished runner-up for the Vaqueros as she was 15th in 20:15. Kelly Castillo (18th, 20:23), Teresa Villafuerte (24th, 20:34) and Caitlyn Selve (43rd, 21:06) rounded out Glendale’s scoring.

As for the Vaqueros’ men, they finished third with 105 points behind American River College (19) and Cerritos College (95).

Enrique Ramirez paced Glendale, earning sixth in 21:27. Close behind Ramirez were teammates Steban Aviles (16th, 22:01), Hoover High alumnus Daniel Marin (18th, 22:07), Edwardo Vasquez (28th, 22:21) and Jorge Serrano (32nd, 22:30).
