Glendale Community College golf edges Canyons for latest win
SIMI VALLEY — Should the Glendale Community College women’s golf team win a second straight Western State Conference championship, it might look back at what transpired during Monday’s conference match as being quite significant.
Glendale college came into the latest round at Simi Hills Golf Course having won three of the first four conference matches. Wednesday proved to be the closet battle that the Vaqueros have encountered this season.
The Vaqueros and rival College of the Canyons finished tied for first with scores of 321, but Glendale won in a tiebreaker by virtue of its fifth scorer shooting three strokes lower than Canyons.
“It’s great for us because we continue to maintain our lead in conference,” said Glendale Coach Greg Osbourne, whose team finished runner-up in the state tournament last season after winning the Southern California Regional crown. “This was a key match for us by the narrowest of margins.
“I wasn’t sure what was going to happen, and it’s hard to believe it came down to a tiebreaker. We’ve been on the losing end of some of these the last couple of years and only on the winning side a couple of times.”
The tiebreaker came down to Glendale’s Jasmine Daniel, a Burroughs High graduate, who finished with a 17-over-par 88 on the 6,000-yard course. She topped Canyons’ Madison Lomas by three strokes to give the Vaqueros the victory with four conference matches remaining.
The Vaqueros received a 77 from Pattraporn Silawanna and a 78 from Thanawan Sriratchaya to lead the way. Vicanda Ma finished with an 81 for Glendale, which also got an 85 from Chardae Hudson.
“It’s the first time Chardae has scored for us all year,” Osbourne said. “Nobody has worked harder than her.
“I’m happy that we won this. The first thing we want to do is win conference.”
Bakersfield finished third with a 375, followed by Santa Barbara (394) and Citrus (425).
Canyons’ Kris Grimes, the reigning individual state champion, shot a 72 to earn medalist honors.
Silawanna, the conference’s reigning individual champion, said it took the first part of the round for her to become comfortable with the course.
“I thought it was pretty tough at first,” Silawanna said. “The greens were pretty fast.
“It’s a good win for us because we want to win conference again. It came down to every shot counting.”
Glendale will next participate in another conference match at 10 a.m. Monday at Brookside Golf Course No. 1 in Pasadena. The Vaqueros will serve as the host team.
