Glendale Community College first-year women’s tennis Coach Deo Sy wasn’t surprised that several matches involving his players lasted more than two hours during the first day of the Western State Conference Tournament in Ventura.

In particular was a second-round match involving Glendale’s Alexandra Amor against Jessica Moore of Santa Barbara in which Amor won, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(7-3).

“That was a very intense match the whole way through,” Sy said. “[Amor] lost the first set, but she knew exactly what she needed to do and she was able to pull things together.

“Even in the tie-breaker, she trailed, 3-1, and then got the next six points. She stayed focused the whole time, whether she was up or trailing.”

In a first-round match, Amor earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Lisa Van Dijk of Santa Barbara.

In addition to Amor winning her first-round match, the Vaqueros got opening-round victories from Ayaka Takeuchi against Lelah Faasua of Ventura (6-0, 7-5), Ashley Sumudio against Lorena Castillo of Antelope Valley College (6-0, 6-1), Amy Shigenaga against Cinthia Garcia of Santa Monica (6-1, 6-3) and Meghedi Mooradian against Donia Huacuja, 6-1, 6-1. Glendale’s Viktoriya Shumakova had a first-round bye.

Shumakova registered a 6-1, 6-0 second-round victory against Izabel Nazdracheva. Takeuchi, Sumudio, Shigenaga and Mooradian lost their respective second-round matchups. Takeuchi, Mooradian, Shigenaga and Sumudio will participate in back draw matches Saturday. Sumudio will take on Shigenaga, in one of the eight back draw matches. The top two from the group of eight will move on to the third round.

“Amy and Ashley know it’s nothing personal,” Sy said. “It’s just part of the game.”

In doubles, Shumakova and Amor and Shigenaga and Takeuchi won their first-round matches by default. Mooradian and Sumudio posted a 6-0, 6-0 first-round win.

The finals will take place Friday in Ventura.
