Glendale High PTA: Wilson Middle School to host Solar Discovery Faire
Wilson Middle School, 1221 Monterey Road, will be the location for this year’s Glendale Solar Discovery Faire from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
This free event is open to the public. Sponsored by the nonprofit Rahus Institute, demonstrations will include solar cooking, solar etching, solar whirligigs, medallions and much more. The Rahus Institute seeks to provide clean-energy solutions for a sustainable world.

The song “Hello, Goodbye” by the Beatles describes a special flag ceremony that will be hosted at R.D. White Elementary at 8:30 a.m. on April 30. The event will let students express a proper farewell to Suzanne Risse, former principal, while officially welcoming Narek Kassabian, current principal.
Wendy Hunter, chair of an ad-hoc committee of parents and staff at the school, is leading this event to recognize Risse, who worked at R.D. White for 14 years. The longtime principal made a transition during summer vacation to become principal at Monte Vista Elementary.
Due to the timing, students and parents did not have a chance to express their deep appreciation to Risse. Following the ceremony, light refreshments will be served in the courtyard outside of the library. Former students, parents and staff as well as local residents may attend.
Glendale High School
A Dance Drill Revue will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday in Glendale High’s newly named John Wayne Performing Arts Center. Glendale High will hold its Armenian Genocide Remembrance Assembly on April 23. There is a student and staff holiday on April 24.
Wilson Middle School
A summer music camp featuring Orchestra 1, Orchestra 2, Band 1 and Band 2 will be held from June 9 to July 3. Applications are available at www.wilsonknights.org. Contact Amanda Kopcsak at akopcsak@gusd.net for more information.
Marshall Elementary
The classes of teachers Gerald Sharp and Kathy Malcolm are raising money to help Longonot Primary School in Kenya by selling bookmarks. Last year, $500 was raised.
A recent presentation by the nonprofit Bloom Where Planted, which works to improve education in the African countries of Kenya and Rwanda, kicked off a week of African-focused activities. These include buddy-reading of African books at 1 p.m. on Thursday. Bookmarks will be sold before school and during recess.

Students are participating in “Tiger Recycling” during April to raise awareness for Earth Day, said Carla Walker, principal and PTA president at Marshall. They are collecting empty water bottles with a schoolwide goal of 100% student participation.

Parents may attend a PTA meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in the PTA Room. Meeting topics include a review of fundraisers. All parents are encouraged to participate and share their input.

It is never too early to think about a career, so the Marshall Student Council will sponsor a Career Day on Friday. To showcase school spirit, students are encouraged to dress in clothing that depicts a future career.

Monthly Spirit Awards Assemblies for students exemplifying qualities of loyalty will be held on April 25. Parents of student honorees may attend the assemblies at 9 a.m. for students in kindergarten and first grade, 9:30 a.m. for students in second and third grades, and 10:10 a.m. for students in fourth and fifth grades. Student Council is sponsoring a Jamba Juice fundraiser at dismissal featuring three flavors for $3 each.
Also, Marshall students will present a spring concert at 6:30 p.m. on May 5 in the auditorium.
