Glendale PD pays close attention to unfocused drivers
More than 50 citations were issued Thursday to motorists as part of a citywide police crackdown on distracted driving.
Police cited 46 motorists for reportedly talking on cellphones and six other drivers for texting while driving in Glendale, according to Glendale police spokeswoman Tahnee Lightfoot.
This week’s enforcement effort was one of four operations scheduled this month that are aimed at increasing awareness about the dangers of distracted driving.
The operations are part of a statewide, month-long clampdown on distracted drivers.
Roughly 3,330 people were killed and 420,000 people were injured nationally in 2012 in traffic collisions involving a distracted driver, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety.
The California Highway Patrol as well as Sacramento area law enforcement agencies issued nearly 10,800 tickets for cellphone violations during three enforcement periods in 2012, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The fee for violating the cellphone law is $161, but ticket costs can jump to $280 with subsequent violations.
Police will continue to look for cellphone violators on April 8, 17 and 22. But they will also enforce cellphone laws throughout this month.
