High winds prompt lamp fixtures removal at Deukmejian Wilderness Park

High winds that whip through Deukmejioan Wilderness Park in north Glendale have been known to knock down heavy light fixtures, a public safety concern city officials are trying to avoid by removing the lamps altogether.

Maintenance workers started removing the 75 light fixtures and 55 50-pound light poleslast week. They expect to complete the task this week, said city spokesman Tom Lorenz, adding that the lamp designs catch the wind.

The 18-foot tall fixtures, which were installed in 2003, may be substituted with new lighting after officials analyze replacement alternatives, Lorenz said.
