Joyce Simmons Peña went to her final rest after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Claude Peña, her parents, Jesse Theodore and Alta Simmons, and her sisters, Joan Simmons and Mary Sue Prout-Wiley.
She was born June 20, 1932 in Rexburg, Idaho, but spent most of her life in Southern California. She was a real estate broker, and for many years headed her own firm, Oakwood Enterprises, based in La Cañada-Flintridge.
The Peña’s retired to La Quinta, CA, where they spent their final years together enjoying the sunshine and their hobbies, including collecting celebrity autobiographies and other memorabilia, taking courses at the local adult education center in topics such as creative writing and desktop publishing, volunteering for community events and charity golf tournaments, and keeping up with old friends; this despite Joyce’s being seriously injured in a fall that left her a hemi-quadriplegic. She was a known figure in La Quinta, often seen buzzing around the shopping plazas in her motorized wheelchair.
She is survived by her extended family including her children and grandchildren: Patty Williams and her husband Gerry of Williams, Arizona, Mike Peña of Everett, Washington and his son Chris and daughter in law Ashley, Kathy Pogge and her husband Jim, of Kingston, Tennessee, and Tim Peña and his wife Marylee and their children: Patricia, LJ, Bobby and Rachel of Simi Valley, California. She also has a great-grandson, Ethan Peña, and a half-sister, Anita Anderson of Spokane, Washington.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
