COLLEGE UPDATE: Johnson’s two goals can’t save USC

The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level.

Katie Johnson (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2012) freshman, forward, USC women’s soccer: Johnson and the Trojans completed the nonconference portion of their schedule Sunday with a 3-2 home loss against Portland, which is ranked 19th in the nation. Johnson, a former All-Area first-team honoree, provided some offensive pop for the Trojans (3-4-1).

Johnson scored a pair of second-half goals to help USC knot the match at 2. After Portland took a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute, Johnson then scored in the 61st and 67th minutes before Portland scored the winning goal about two minutes later.

She finished with a team-high six shots, including three on goal, in 74 minutes.

On Friday in a nonconference match against host San Diego, Johnson had two shots in USC’s 3-2 victory.

In eight matches, Johnson has registered three goals and six points. She’s recorded 16 shots, eight on goal.

The Trojans will begin Pacific-12 Conference action at 2 p.m. Friday with a home contest against Washington.

Pavle Atanackovic (Crescenta Valley High, 2012) freshman, forward, UC Irvine men’s soccer: Atanackovic, the reigning All-Area Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year, has come off the bench to gain some valuable experience for the Anteaters during the early part of the season. Atanackovic, who helped Crescenta Valley win the CIF Southern Section Division IV championship in March, showed he also has a knack for scoring timely goals at the collegiate level.

Atanackovic scored his first two goals of the season, both in the second half, to help Irvine record a 2-2 tie against Missouri State on Friday in a Lobo Invitational match in Albuquerque, N.M.

With Irvine trailing, 2-0, Atanackovic scored goals in the 74th and 76th minutes. Former Burbank standout Gor Kirakosyan assisted on Atanackovic’s second tally. Atanackovic collected three shots on goal.

On Sunday in another tournament contest, Atanackovic finished with one shot on goal in Irvine’s 2-1 double-overtime loss against host New Mexico.

Atanackovic has four shots on goal in 55 minutes.

Irvine (3-3-1) will next participate in the Oregon State Nike Classic in Corvallis, Ore. The Anteaters will first meet Gonzaga at 2 p.m. Friday and will then face Oregon State at noon Sunday.

Camille Coffey (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2011) sophomore, outside hitter, Fairfield University women’s volleyball: The former All-Area Girls’ Volleyball Player of the Year has received some quality playing time of late for the Stags, who have won seven matches in a row.

Coffey made a sizable impact Sunday for Fairfield, as she had 14 digs and eight kills in the Stags’ 27-25, 28-30, 23-25, 25-19 win against visiting Manhattan College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match.

Coffey turned in another fine performance Sept. 1 against Dartmouth in the University of Connecticut Classic in Storrs, Conn. Coffey finished with 12 digs and nine kills to lead Fairfield to a 25-16, 25-20, 25-20 victory.

Coffey also shined recently at the Sacred Heart Hampton Inn Shelton Invitational. She notched 15 digs and seven kills in Fairfield’s 25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 13-25, 15-13 win against Central Florida on Sept. 8. In the event’s championship contest, Coffey had six digs and four kills to help Fairfield record a 26-24, 25-21, 25-13 win against host Sacred Heart.

In 31 games, Coffey has posted 96 digs and 64 kills.

Fairfield (7-5, 2-0 in conference) will next face host Siena College at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a conference tilt.
