Liu’s bill extends foreclosure notification law

Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed a bill to extend legislation that informs homeowners if they are in danger of losing their properties.

SB 827, introduced by state Sen. Carol Liu (D-La Cañada Flintridge) and signed into law in 2011, authorized Los Angeles County to mail a notice when a property goes into a default or foreclosure, giving the owner time if they wish to contact a lawyer or seek counseling to discuss any rights they may have.

The new bill extends the program through 2020. So far, letters have been sent to 3,000 area residents.

“Foreclosures continue to be a widespread problem in Los Angeles County,” Liu said in a statement. “This program provides more warning to residents and gives them information about resources for help.”
