Marshalls grabs downtown Glendale location

Marshalls, a discount clothing retailer, is moving into the long-vacant former Borders store at Broadway and Brand in downtown Glendale.

The building on the prime location at 100 S. Brand Blvd. stands out because of its unique glass-front design. It’s been vacant since Borders was shuttered in April 2011.

Randy Leano, project manager for McKently Malak Architects in Pasadena, said it is company policy for Marshalls stores to open either before summer or before the fall holiday season, and this location is aiming for an autumn opening.

The new store represents a bet on Glendale’s successful retail environment by its parent corporation, Framingham, Mass.-based The TJX Companies Inc., said city spokesman Tom Lorenz.

In addition to a Marshalls in Montrose, Glendale is home to a HomeGoods store and a T.J.Maxx, both owned by TJX, making the new store its fourth business in the city.

“It’s interesting because all of [the stores] serve a different demographic,” Lorenz said. “It shows how much [The TJX Companies] value, and how much return they expect in this city.... It shows how strong the economy is in Glendale.”

Applications for building, electrical and plumbing permits have been filed with the city and are being reviewed by the planning department.

The building permit calls for improvements to be made throughout the two-story, 29,557-square-foot space.

Leano said he thought the permits would be approved and issued next week, which would allow the project to begin construction sometime in June. Leano said construction is expected to last about 100 days.

Marshalls representatives could not be reached for comment on Friday.
